Somehow God is in the “gene of Hispanics”. The discoveries of the Hispanic Lands in the new hemisphere more than 500 years ago brought a culture, a language and the inscription of the word of God as a heritage. It was in the Dominican Republic, the Hispaniola, where the first mass was pronounced and the first catholic cathedral was built. And the first university of the western hemisphere was established. One of the first concordats within state and religion was signed there too. Indeed Santo Domingo is the center of the civilization since Christopher Columbus came to us from Spain in October 12, 1492. “Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of the spreading of the Christian religion”. But more and more millions of Hispanics in Caribbean (Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic), in the United States and around the world are “un-churched” searching for meaning alone, looking for a sense of community, longing for enduring connections beyond dogmas and liturgies. Is the Ethical Cultural Movement, founded by Felix Adler in 1876 (136 years ago), ready to overcome these obstacles within the Hispanics community, diversify itself within the American Ethical Union (AEU), and offer a space in their own language for intelligent discussions, colloquies and platforms and in the process make the consideration for a Godless Ethic in Hispanics beyond theology?

ETHICS, RELIGION AND HISPANICS

Some studies suggest that a growing number of Hispanics are leaving organized religion. Are Humanist-oriented movements such as Ethical Culture paying attention to these “un-churched”, godless Hispanics? Dr. Jorge Piña is wondering if this is the right momentum for the establishment of the first HISPANIC SOCIETY FOR ETHICAL CULTURE (HiSEC) in the United States within the movement founded by Felix Adler in 1876 (136 years ago). And to create a vital connection with all of the 22 congregations within the American Ethical Union (AEU). The objective is to bring a permanent dialogue on diversity and to reach out to the vibrant Hispanic community across the country, increase memberships, train more leaders and open new branches and retreats in the Caribbean, Latin-America and Spain. And celebrate platforms and ceremonies in other languages, especially in the Spanish language. Being this a mayor trend that has had important and lasting results in other religions and congregations all around the world since 500 years ago, Dr. Piña believes the moment is NOW.
